"An ideas generation package par excellence, which also doubles as a writing and communication tool. When you use it, you can't help but marvel at the wisdom it contains and how often a question takes you to a new perspective. It has actually been around for a long time, with the last version 6.0 recently getting a Pro tag and added modules and functionality .

As mentioned earlier in this article, some of this software requires a new way of doing things, but it makes it worthwhile when you have an Idea Bank (directly analogous to an ideas thesaurus) and a Question Bank (which gets you focussed and ensures you get a look at the situation from all sides) in the toolkit.

Everyone should have one."

Powerful Writing & Communication Tools for Small Business

Charles "Chic" Thompson wrote in "What a Great Idea" :

At the moment, the most powerful idea-generation software overall is IdeaFisher, which does not involve Idea Mapping. Marsh Fisher, cofounder of the real estate giant Century 21 International, retired in 1977 to play golf and to understand better the creative process. Twelve years and $4 million later, IdeaFisher was released.

IdeaFisher, a computerised aid to brainstorming and problem-solving, helps speed up the creative process. Marsh came to the calss that I teach at the Federal Executive Institute to demonstrate his software - and it was amazing! I bought a copy for my Macintosh on the spot; it's also available for Windows.

Idea Fisher consists of an interactive database of questions and idea words and phrases. Questions are organised to help you define, clarify, modify and evaluate your needs. You can even add your own questions to the three thousand already supplied. More than sixty thousand idea words and phrases are structured in 28 major categories and 387 topical categories. This puts more than seven hundred thousand direct idea associations at your fingertips.

Described by one reviewer as a "giant library with many doorways," IdeaFisher can give you easily more than one thousand associations, grouped in categories, for a single word - let's say the key word in the topic of your next report or talk. Store the ideas you want to play with on the programs's notepad, add your own nots to them via the text editor, then print or transfer to another program such as word processing.

Knowledge workers who issue reports, plans, designs, briefs, scripts and projections in some of the largest companies in the world are now using the program. So are marketing professionals, lawyers, design engineers, ad executives, television and movie producers, and others whose jobs involve strategy, planning, consulting or marketing. I've used IdeaFisher to develop scripts, create metaphors, and develop a promotional campaign along with slogans.

Fisher states that creating ideas is "a process, not an accident. You plant, you fertilise, you harvest." With IdeaFisher plus the techniques learnt here [Thompson's book], I'm sure you'll raise a bumper crop.
